Please be aware that we are required by the Code of Virginia to consider party affiliation in making assignments:

  • In our initial assignments, we need about 1,000 Democratic officers. We currently have about 2,000 Democratic officers available and eligible for assignment. This means not all Democratic officers will receive an assignment.
  • In our initial assignments, we need about 1,000 Republican officers. We currently have about 800 Republican officers available and eligible for assignment. This means we will assign all available Republican officers and we still need additional Republican officers.
  • In our initial assignments, we will assign 0 Independent officers. We currently have about 1,000 Independent officers available and eligible for assignment. We will assign Independent officers only if there are vacancies after assigning and confirming Democratic and Republican officers.
  • In our initial assignments, we need about 200 Language Officers. These are individuals who speak a required language (Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, or Farsi) and we have verified their language skills. Language Officers are assigned without regard for party affiliation.

Vietnamese and Korean speakers needed: Bilingual officers perform all regular election officer duties, including assisting most voters in English, but will be assigned to precincts with a significant number of voters who may primarily speak Vietnamese or Korean. If you speak Vietnamese or Korean, please apply to serve in the next election! If you were referred by another election officer, make sure to mention their name in the Comments box at the bottom of the application page.

Which party do you prefer to represent?*

Independents may not serve as Chief or Assistant Chief Election Officers. Election officers perform non-partisan job duties. Residents of Virginia do not register by party to vote, but the Code of Virginia requires us to consider party affiliation in assigning election officers and to try to assign an equal number of officers of each party in each precinct. Unaffiliated officers are assigned after Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, and party-affiliated officers.
